About Our Work
ISLAND STONE
The inspiration for our Island Stone pattern comes from our love of Prince Edward Island’s red dirt roads and sandstone cliffs. The primary colourant used in this glaze is red iron oxide intended to mimic the abundance of iron found in PEI’s infamous red soil. The unglazed band of wavy lines is our representation of the ripples left on the sand beaches as a result of the changing tides. Our controlled firing temperatures and glaze applications gives us a finished product that is rich in colour and silky smooth to the touch. (Several of our clients have also described this glaze as looking like leather and/or rich mahogany wood.) This pattern is a wonderful representation of Prince Edward Island. Any one of our Island Stone pieces would be an excellent choice for anyone looking for a distinctly Island keepsake or memento.
CELTIC
The pieces of our Celtic line of pottery are skillfully incised by hand with a Celtic knot or design. Prince Edward Island and the other Atlantic provinces are rich in Celtic heritage. The blue/green glaze that we use for this line “breaks” gently around the design to enhance the look and feel on every pot. The pattern that we put on any particular piece is specifically designed to compliment its size and shape. This glaze is also safe for food and drinks and can be used in the oven, microwave and dishwasher.
TRULY CANADIAN
Our Truly Canadian pattern is created by pressing real Maple leaves onto the sides of our pots while the clay is still soft. Each leaf has its own unique characteristics so no two pieces of pottery in the pattern are exactly the same. Before glazing each piece we hand paint a wax emulsion over the leaves to prevent glaze adhesion. The glaze used for this line can the same as the one we use for our Celtic patterns, or we use our red/brown glaze depending on the application. We find the contrast in colour between the clay and the glaze helps to further accentuate the natural veins of the leaves. Purchasing a piece from this patriot line of pottery makes a great Canadian souvenir for any of your out-of-country guests, family or friends.
